Last week, MDVMA members gathered in Annapolis for the Annual Legislative Day, where veterinary professionals engaged with lawmakers on key issues impacting the field.
Dr. Mary Beth Soverns, DVM, of Countryside Veterinary Clinic, shared her firsthand experience:
"It was an eye-opening experience at the Maryland General Assembly. As a member of the veterinary community, I had the chance to meet with legislators and learn about bills affecting our community and the veterinary profession.
At first, navigating the legislative process felt intimidating, but the MDVMA legislative community made it easier. Their support gave me the confidence to engage with legislators, answer questions, and share my perspective.
It was inspiring to hear about the work being done to address issues like animal welfare and the future of veterinary medicine, but devastating to discuss the emerging avian influenza virus in our state. Veterinarians take an oath for the welfare of people and animals, and I hope my 39 years of experience can help shape the successful future of both.”
